“The service Headway provides is absolutely essential to islanders with brain injuries. We were impressed to see how well the charity operates, which is reflected in the winning of the Community Awards for Charity of the Year and The Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for charities. It was an easy decision to pledge funding for two years to ensure Headway can carry out its great work, unhindered by costs.”

Karen Jagger, Chair of the Sure Community Foundation

The Sure Community Foundation has pledged to support local charity Headway’s weekly veteran sessions for the next two years.
Headway helps people with life-changing brain injuries, supporting their return to the community by enabling them to socialise with people with similar issues. The charity runs several group sessions across the week, including a “Headway veterans” group on Fridays for people who have been with the charity for some time. Donations are essential to ensure the continued running of these sessions and thanks to the Sure Community Foundation, this established group will be continuing their vital work for the next 24 months.

The donation of £5,700 will cover the cost of renting Headway’s dedicated space at KG5 for the weekly sessions. It will also cover the costs to provide food, drinks, and entertainment for the group, and contribute towards special events. Crucially, the funds will be also used to fund the provision of Headway’s specialist staff, during these sessions, who are uniquely trained to help people with brain injuries reintegrate into society.
Karen Jagger, Chair of the Sure Community Foundation said: “The service Headway provides is absolutely essential to islanders with brain injuries. We were impressed to see how well the charity operates, which is reflected in the winning of the Community Awards for Charity of the Year and The Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for charities. It was an easy decision to pledge funding for two years to ensure Headway can carry out its great work, unhindered by costs.

“As Community Award winners ourselves, the Community Foundation recognises the value in an effectively run charity, and Headway has become an essential part of Guernsey’s support network. We look forward to seeing how the funding allows the charity to roll out new, exciting initiatives.”

Philippa Stahelin, Executive Director of Headway said: “We are extremely grateful for the Sure Community Foundation’s donation. Karen and the rest of the team have proven time and again that they really understand the essence of what we are providing.
“By offering to fund Headway’s veterans’ sessions for the next two years, the Foundation has made it possible for us to plan ahead, undertake new projects, and provide our members with the best possible service. This funding will help some of our most vulnerable islanders adjust to their new lives.”.
