Why Leadership matters

During my time as a leader, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of giving my team autonomy. When individuals feel trusted and empowered to make decisions, they not only perform better but also become more invested in the success of the organisation.

We caught up with Sure’s Chief Executive in Jersey, Paul Acton, on his experience of leadership and how that has been shaped by his time at Sure Business.

What is a leader to you?

As a leader, there are two principles that guide my approach: empowerment and trust. A wise person once said that micromanagement is the antithesis of productivity; a sentiment I echo wholeheartedly.

During my time as a leader, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of giving my team autonomy. When individuals feel trusted and empowered to make decisions, they not only perform better but also become more invested in the success of the organisation. Leadership is about raising the standards and elevating the bar to be the best in class at everything we do, as well as fostering a culture where every member feels valued and capable of contributing their best. A big part of leadership is therefore removing the barriers that might prevent the team from feeling that power and autonomy.

It’s important to strike a delicate balance between setting clear, achievable goals and providing an environment where individuals can thrive. I also believe that collaboration is key, and recognise that true innovation often comes from collective effort and diverse perspectives.

Our team are serious about their work, but we believe that a happy team is a productive team, and we prioritise cultivating a workplace that supports a healthy work-life balance.

Celebrating success is ingrained in our culture at Sure. We don't just view success as reaching a particular milestone or achieving a set target; instead, we see it as a collective sense of accomplishment derived from a job well done. Whether it's a small victory or a significant achievement, each success is recognised and celebrated, reinforcing our team's commitment and motivation.

Ultimately, leadership is about empowering our expert team, creating a culture of trust and autonomy, and celebrating success as a collective achievement.
