Sure has joined forces with Digital Jersey to support the island’s participation in the United Nations for Smart Sustainable Cites (U4SSC) initiative.

The United Nations (UN) initiative uses information and communication technologies (ICT) to provide an international platform for information exchange, knowledge sharing and partnership building with the aim of making cities smarter and more sustainable.

Graham Hughes, Chief Executive at Sure Jersey, said: “At Sure we see the importance of this initiative for Jersey as it puts us in a position to gain further knowledge and enhance our insights into the world of ‘Big Data’ as well as attracting off-island investment in our digital sector.

“It gives the island the chance to progress in becoming smart and sustainable and as a sponsor it’s a fantastic opportunity for Sure to work with the government to shape the island’s digital future and have a say in the direction of this hugely valuable and exciting project.”

Jersey is one of only five pilot locations taking part in the global initiative. Inclusion in the project positions the island as a forward-thinking and sustainable jurisdiction and showcases its use of evolving technologies to the rest of the world.

The key objectives of the project are to generate guidelines, policies and frameworks for the integration of ICT and to establish best practices with targets to achieve sustainable development goals set by the UN.

Digital Jersey CEO, Tony Moretta said: “We will be sharing knowledge with the idea of formulating the strategic guidance for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It builds on work already completed here in Jersey by Government and by industry, particularly with regards to connectivity and 3D modelling; and will help catapult us into the cutting-edge use of live data to improve decision making on functions such as urban planning and sustainable transport.’
